The house (2022) Script book
THE HOUSE
The House is a stop-motion anthological film consisting of three families living within the same house at different time periods. These stories, while seemingly different, all connect to a larger idea that can be explored through themes of madness, materialism, and human connection.
This book explores the third section of the film–Rosa’s story. Rosa is so focused on her dream of renovating the house and renting out the rooms that she never fully connects with her current tenants–the only people left in her life. While obsessing over the house’s renovations, she ignores the impending flood that is slowly engulfing the house.
This book was a part of the SCAD Library Special Collections Artist Book Competition and was one of the handful collected to be displayed in the Artist Book Competition Exhibit!
AWARD WINNING!
This project was given an honorable mention by the International Design Awards (IDA) 2024 for the “Print/ Books” category in the student section!
THE COVER
The hard cover is red wool needle-felted onto a beige linen and bound with a single page coptic stitch binding. The die cut cover and the restrictive strings represent the main character prioritizing the soon to be flooded house over connecting with her two remaining peers, condemning herself to a life of isolation and loneliness.
GRID SYSTEM
As time goes on throughout the script, Rosa becomes more and more irate, stubborn to leave the house she lives in with her peers. As her tenants begin to leave one by one, she becomes more isolated. The axial grid creates a centerline for dialogue; as she begins to alienate herself from her peers, the dialogue begins to separate, further conveying her self isolation. During moments of deep conversation however, the dialogue overlaps with one another, breaking the axial grid, to illustrate moments of human connection and companionship.
